KM&A attended South by Southwest (SXSW), a film, interactive media and music festival and conference in Austin, Texas last month! SXSW is all about innovation, creativity and emerging trends in these areas. Awesome, right?! During this time, KM&A gained an inside scoop on podcast storytelling, influencer marketing, hype cycles, design, advertising and women in business. Continue reading to discover our insights! 

 

Podcast Storytelling 

In recent years, podcasting has experienced a significant increase in popularity. People listen while commuting, cleaning, walking. So… how does a brand engage in this trending engagement? Here’s what we learned. 

  • Podcasting should be a core component of every brand’s marketing strategy.  
  • Podcasts can be used to achieve a variety of marketing goals, such as brand awareness, lead generation and customer engagement. 
  • Take risks to reach new listeners! Think high risk, high reward. 
  • Use storytelling and connect the dots between topics and people so they are more relatable. 

 

Influencer Marketing 

Social media and influencer marketing magnify unrealistic beauty standards, overconsumption and product waste. SXSW panelists from Dove, Maybelline, Beauty Independent and Traackr discussed achieving socially responsible influencer marketing and proposed solutions. 

  • Encouraging influencers to promote diversity and body positivity. 
  • Highlighting the use of makeup and other beauty products as a form of self-expression rather than a way to achieve unrealistic ideals. 
  • Partnering with influencers known for their authenticity and positive influence. 
  • Disclosing sponsorships and collaborations transparently to build trust with audiences. 

 

Hype Cycles 

What is a “hype cycle”? A hype cycle in social media is where new ideas go from excitement to disappointment and eventually find a stable place. The ever-evolving preferences and demands of consumers pose ongoing challenges in the field of advertising. KM&A gained key info in navigating hype cycles: 

  • Consumers constantly crave novelty, which creates a mass of marketing hype.  
  • Timing is crucial – be too early and you lose, be too late and others win. 
  • Look at market signals, consumer behavior and even AI to predict what will last. 

 

Design 

Microsoft’s VP of Design and AI offered a thought-provoking insight into a new and developing area of design. AI! The session focused on the evolving role of design in a technology landscape increasingly shaped by AI. What role do designers play in ensuring responsible development and ethical considerations? 

  • Designers have a crucial, yet challenging, role to play.  
  • They must champion ethical considerations for AI within their teams, collaborating with policymakers to ensure responsible development.  
  • This new era of AI presents exciting opportunities for growth and innovation, even with the potential for spectacular failures. But through these failures, we can learn and improve. 

 

Advertising 

In the face of social justice movements, brands wield significant influence and have a responsibility to speak up and take a stance was my main takeaway. Recent controversies led some companies to prioritize self-preservation over taking a stand. When is this right and when is it wrong?  

  • Brands and advertisers have a responsibility to leverage their platforms for good. 
  • Understand the responsibility corporations have for social justice. 
  • Ask: What more can you do? 
  • Leverage current infrastructure in-house, such as digital marketing resources, to advertise for impact. 

 

Women in Business 

Renowned model, actor, and entrepreneur Brooke Shields shared her mission to foster connections and cultivate community as we navigate the future. In traditionally male-dominated sectors, women have the power to make an impact without yielding to defeat. Here are a few steps toward making an impact: 

  • Maintain optimism and embrace continuous learning. 
  • Build a supportive community of women. 
  • Changes can be made at all levels.
